Bonds still one shy of Hank; Giants down Dodgers

Baseball Betting Lines

08/03/2007 - Los Angeles, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Another night, another homerless game for Barry Bonds in pursuit of Hank Aaron's all-time home run record, as the Giants downed the Dodgers, 4-2, behind a strong pitching performance from Barry Zito.

Bonds singled, popped out to the catcher and walked twice, staying at 754 career homers and one behind Aaron as the pursuit heads down the coast to San Diego for a weekend set starting Friday.

Zito (8-10) was the star on this night, yielding just one run on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts over 5 2/3 frames. The southpaw fared much better than he had in his previous two starts, surrendering 13 runs over only 9 1/3 frames.

Pedro Feliz drove home a pair for the Giants, who took two games in the series at Chavez Ravine. San Francisco has won six of eight overall and five of six in Los Angeles.

Brett Tomko (2-9) took the loss, giving up three runs on five hits with three walks and one strikeout over five frames. Luis Gonzalez and Russell Martin drove in runs for the Dodgers, losers in four of five.

The Giants scored three times in the first starting with Omar Vizquel's single and Randy Winn's run-scoring double. Bonds walked in front of Feliz's RBI single and Kevin Frandsen's sacrifice fly plated Bonds later in the frame.

Los Angeles got on the board in the fifth as Martin worked a walk forcing home Matt Kemp. San Francisco answered in the seventh when Feliz knocked home Vizquel with a base hit to left.

Gonzalez recorded an RBI groundout in the ninth, but Steve Kline retired James Loney with the bases loaded to end the game and post his second save. Manager Bruce Bochy decided to walk Nomar Garciaparra with a base open prior to Loney's at-bat, as Garciaparra is the league's best batter with runners in scoring position.

Game Notes

The Dodgers still lead the season series 7-5...Bonds is just 2-for-14 since hitting home run No. 754 last Friday against Florida...Commissioner Bud Selig was not in attendance, replaced by league consultant Frank Robinson. Selig will be in San Diego on Friday.

MySportsbook.com: NBA Championship Odds

With the playoffs about two months away, the top two teams in the Western Conference are the clear cut leaders to win the NBA Championship. The Dallas Mavericks have the best record in the NBA (44-9) and have been absolutely scorching since the second week of the season.  What makes the Mavs’ record more impressive is the fact that they dropped their first four games of the season.  Currently they have won 17 out of their last 18 and are MySportsbook.com’s favorite (2-1) to win it all.  Right behind the Mavs are the Pacific leading Phoenix Suns (39-13).  Last season, the Suns lost in the Conference Finals to non-other then the Mavericks four games to two.  Of course the Suns were without center Amare Stoudemire who has is averaging 19.9 PPG and 9.5 RPG since coming back from his knee injury.  Unlike the Mavs, the Suns have struggled a bit lately having lost their last three and four out of their last seven.  Of course the main reason for their three straight loses is due to the absence of two time MVP Steve Nash, who is out with a shoulder injury.  Heads-up, the Mavs have beaten the Suns in both of their meetings this season.

In the Eastern Conference, the Pistons (32-19) are the favorites to win it all at 6-1. The addition of Chris Webber seems to have been a good move for the Pistons.  Since coming over from the 76ers, Webber has averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG and the Pistons are 11-4.  Even though the defending champion Heat are currently on the playoff making cusp, they are the Eastern Conference team that is getting the most action to win it all (9-1).  The fact that Shaquille O’Neal is back in the starting lineup after missing 39 games probably has something to do with this.  No doubt, Shaq makes a difference when in the lineup as their winning six out of their last seven would indicate.
